Organization experts Gareth Morgan and Karl Weick use metaphors to express how organizations organize themselves. Everyone uses metaphor for different purposes. Morgan’s purpose is to help practitioners apply a theory about their organization, while Weick’s purpose is to help leaders theoretically think about their practice. Morgan says, “The challenge is to learn the art of using metaphors: finding new ways to see, understand, and shape the situations we want to organize and manage” (6). Like a brain, your organization is a complex information processing system that responds to stimuli, introduces new ways of being, creates plans, and initiates action.
